Listed below are some home remedies for various general "ailments".
These have not been tested and have no medical background but are given in good faith.

Please note, any remedy is undertaken at your own risk.

To ease leg cramps - This may seem unlikely but it works for me. If you get cramps in the calf muscles, pinch your top lip just below the nose as hard as you can. The cramp will go. It may return but do it again and again for instant relief.

To reduce fever - Anisya Bolkonski has been kind enough to share this gem with us all!

I know of an exceptionally effective natural remedy for healing burns and lowering a fever: egg whites.

Egg whites are by far the best method to lower a high temperature within MINUTES! When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I had acquired a fever so high that I started to hallucinate. My mother was in a panic, she feared brain damage if something didn't lower the fever and FAST. My grandma told her to soak 2 cloths or handkerchiefs in egg whites and put on the soles of the feet (cover with socks). The egg whites instantaneously start to draw the temperature DOWN from the brain (where it is dangerous) to the feet (where it can do no damage). After that incident my mom used this method successfully every time I had high temp.

The egg whites are also a miracle cure for burns, even severe ones. Soak or coat affected area in egg white. While the egg white is still wet you will feel no pain from the burn. As soon as it dries up the pain comes back so reapplication is necessary. This method not only alleviates the pain it actually heals and prevents scarring from the burn.

I submitted this remedy to http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/fever.html  and there has been a lot of positive feed back:

I would like to let more people know about the miraculous effectiveness of treating fevers and burns with egg whites so please post this on your site if you deem fit.

Indigestion - add a spoonful of Ground Cardamon into a cup of coffee.

Insomnia - Eat a lettuce sandwich before going to bed.

Car sickness - Eat some crystallised ginger.

A cure for headaches, without using chemicals.  Take a lime, cut it in half and rub on your forehead.  The throbbing will go away.

Mark Ward.

To get rid of hiccups (or hiccoughs) take a small sip of apple cider vinegar.  That's it - hiccups have gone (or so I am told).

 Carol

Or - a spoonful of sugar- this also does the trick.

To stop mosquito bites itching apply a tiny dab of haemorrhoidal ointment.

When I received this one I asked how on earth they found out this worked and was told that a very young member of the family had read on the box "stops itching and irritation" so gave it a go!!!

If you have an itchy insect bite and scratch it, it only damages the skin, inflames it and makes it itch 10 times worse. But, if you use two fingers held about an inch apart and scratch either side of the bite it *feels* as if you are scratching it, but you do no damage! Blissful. Try it - it really works!

Peter Lapinskas

Insect stings - rub a slice of raw onion on the sting as soon as possible.

Sunburn  -  Mix equal measures of Aloe Vera Gel and Honey then apply to the affected area.  The aloe aids in healing the damaged skin and the honey has a natural analgesic effect.  Users will not really notice the "sticky" sensation that would be assumed with just plain honey.

This has been received from someone who has served as a firefighter/paramedic in the United States Air Force - so who is going to argue.

 Charley Johnson.

Burns - to take the pain out of a small burn make a paste from baking soda and water and apply gently to the affected area.   Swelling and pain will disappear.

When you have a cold to prevent a sore nose, use cotton based toilet tissue instead of the regular "Kleenex" type.

 "pattyyorkie"

Splinters - If a splinter is too small to extract with tweezers, put some Elmer's Glue on the spot and let it dry.  Then pull the glue in the opposite direction to that which the splinter entered.  It works great - no tears, no traumas.

I must admit I am not familiar with "Elmer's Glue", but hopefully you all are.

 "Tinker Dink"

Get some MAGNESIUM SULPHATE which if you put this on it does pull the splinter out. You put a blob on and cover with a plaster it will work itself out in a day or so, this does work. I have also been told that a 'bread poultice' made with bread and hot water also works.

Recently I was asked if I knew how to get rid of warts.   My daughter is a pharmacist and she said there were a variety of over the counter preparations but warts usually disappear of their own accord, although it can take two to three years.  They often return even after surgery.

I did further research and came across a couple of 'alternative' remedies which I thought may be of interest.

I would like to stress, it is important that the wart is diagnosed as such BEFORE any type of treatment is tried.

  • Take the INSIDE of a Banana peel and rub the wart 2 times daily..........usually is gone in two or three days...even worked on a wart that was on the inside of my child's nose.

Jeannie Johns

  • Rub the wart with the inside of a broad bean pod.

  • Lightly rub the surface of the wart with a pumice stone in warm water.  Place the inside of a banana skin to the wart and keep in place overnight.  It will probably sting on initial contact.  Repeat this process and it should vanish in a few days.

  • Rub the wart with onion which has been dipped in salt.  If this does not get rid of the wart, it will surely get rid of your friends!

  • A remedy my family and I have used a few times to remove warts is putting saliva on your wart first thing in the morning. It only works first thing. A chemical build up in your mouth overnight. It takes a week or two depending on how good you are at remembering to do it. This does work.

Warts are apparently a virus and they will, in fact, disappear of their own accord over time.

Perhaps a more controversial remedy just received from Donald Garner, is to get a book of paper matches, strike one and blow it out as soon as it lights.  Stick the burnt end to the tip of the wart, it will turn white and fall off.  Depending on the size of the wart it may have to be done several times.  NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN.

This is a bit like DIY cauterization and I must stress I cannot guarantee results.  Any remedy undertaken is done so at your own risk!
