What is the best base for an ottoman bed?

So, you have your heart set on an ottoman bed and are eager to take advantage of all the space-saving opportunities and handy underbed storage. But what ottoman bed base is best suited to your bedroom? The team at Comfybedss explain all there is to know about ottoman bed bases throughout this blog, helping you to select the most suitable option.

Choose a lift layout that fits your space

All ottoman bed frames offer hidden storage compartments beneath the mattress and typically feature sturdy gas-lift pistons to support the lifting of the mattress platform.

However, not all ottoman beds have the same opening layout and direction – in fact, there are several options to choose from:

Side-lift

As you’ve likely guessed, side-lift ottomans open from the side of the bed base. This can be on either the left or right-hand side.

Side-lift ottoman beds are a great choice for wide spaces where there’s plenty of room on one or either side of the bed.

However, we wouldn’t recommend side-lift ottomans for narrow spaces, or if you plan to have shelving just above your bed as you won’t be able to fully extend the mattress platform. This can not only lead to wall or bed damage, but can also make accessing your underbed storage unsafe.

You also need to factor in bedside tables and nearby furniture.

End-lift

The most common type of ottoman bed is the end-lift base – the underbed storage is accessed by lifting the mattress from the foot-end of the bed.

End-lift ottomans are ideally suited to narrow bedrooms with less width, making them an excellent option for box rooms and guest bedrooms.

But, if you plan on placing your new bed against a wall, you may find an end-lift ottoman more difficult to access – in this case, a side lift would be the better choice.

Half-lift

Finally, there are half-lift ottoman beds to consider. With these types, only half of the mattress platform lifts, rather than the entire base.

Half-lift ottoman beds are designed for bedrooms with low or slanted ceilings, or in spaces where only one side of the bed frame is accessible – if you have an attic room, this style is perfect!

These bed bases still provide a good amount of storage space, allowing you to store seasonal items, trinkets and fresh bedding.

What about fabric options?

As well as the function considerations, you’ll also need to choose the best ottoman bed base upholstering for your room aesthetic.

There’s an array of fabrics to pick from, including soft velvets, chenille, and naples upholstery, all offering their unique appeal.

Then, you’ll need to select between colour options – browns and creams are neutral choices that look stunning among many decors. Whereas vibrant colours such as reds and silvers fit effortlessly into quirkier rooms.

Ultimately, the ottoman bed you select should depend on the size and shape of your bedroom and the style of your space!
